Dericka Canada Cunningham, PhD
Founder of Grounded Black Women
Hi! I’m Dericka—the founder of Grounded Black Women. I am a wife, a mom, and a licensed psychologist who enjoys celebrating the intersections of my life and career experiences with my identities as a Black woman Christ-follower. Since I was a young girl, I have felt a calling to create a devotional space for Black women and by Black women. As a psychologist and psychotherapist, healing and the importance of connecting to oneself and others is at the center of my work. As a wife and mother, I have learned the necessity of humility, surrendering and having patience and compassion with myself and others. As a Black woman, I have grown to honor the power of ancestorial strength and wisdom. And, as a Christ-follower, being deeply rooted in God’s Word and purpose for me and my life and having a sustaining connection to the Holy Trinity in every aspect of my life is the foundation of who I am. My hope in creating this space is to bring all of these aspects of myself together to empower Black women in being grounded in all of the beautiful aspects of themselves.
I am not by any means a Bible scholar, but I am a woman of Faith who hears from God, who has personally witnessed the power of the Living Word in my life, and who hopes to share the ways I have been inspired and transformed over the years by Divine wisdom. I consider myself a recovering perfectionist and an evolving imperfectionist, and to be honest since God has tugged on my heartstrings to move forward with this call, I have consistently questioned if I’m qualified and able. Yet at each whisper of doubt, I remember God’s Word (“And those He predestined, He also called; those He called, He also justified; those He justified, He also glorified”, Romans 8:30, NIV)–and with this, I walk in faith in trusting God in this process and I humbly and authentically pour out to you in the God-given purpose I was called to.
